Subway Art Book Signing-25th Anniversary Edition
I got my first copy of Subway Art in 1984 the year of its’ publication and it changed my life and that of thousands of others around the world….
Being the first full colour picture book to document the New York Graffiti Trains it was the bible to a generation. Before the internet and the information revolution we relied on books photo albums and camera film to preserve and communicate graffiti. This was the book that launched a million careers, and was responsible for the viral spread of the biggest art phenomenon in history and millions of pounds worth of ‘enhancements’ to trains all over the world….
Twenty five years on the book is still in print and has just been reissued in large format hardback with lots of previously unpublished shots, and the book launch and signing was last night, 25th June 09 at Black Rat Press, Rivington Street, Shoreditch, London.
Photographers Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper were the pioneers who documented the graffiti phenomenon and collaborated to make this book. they were both signing as was graffiti writer Blade, all city King of New York through the seventies and eighties, and the man responsible for some of the most groundbreaking and experimental ‘whole-car’ graffiti pieces.
